K'gari Ferry
K'gari is accessible to 4WD vehicles only as all roads on the island are sand tracks and need both 4WD high clearance and low range to traverse the island (AWD vehicles are not suitable). The eastern 75-Mile Beach is only traversable 2-hours either side of high tide. Normal Queensland road rules apply to all tracks and beaches with speed limits on the beach up to 80 kph and 40 kph in shared zones and camping areas. The inland sand tracks are 30 kph. A Quensland National Parks Vehicle Access Permit is required to drive on the island, and camping permits are also required per person.

Q. Do you need a 4WD to drive on K'gari?
A. For independent travel you will need a 4WD, plus permit if you plan to drive in the Great Sandy National Park. You can pre-purchase your permit at the Queensland National Parks website. We also have guided 4WD tours that depart the resort daily, exploring the island's most iconic sights.
Q. What's the weather like on K'gari?
A. K’gari has a subtropical climate, meaning warm to hot temperatures year-round, with wet, humid summers (especially January-March) and drier, milder winters (June-August). The average summer temperature on K'gari is 29°C (86°F), average winter temperature is 22°C (72°F). Bring warmer clothing for cooler winter nights.
Q. Can you purchase fuel and supplies on K'gari?
A. There are multiple locations to access fuel and essential supplies including Kingfisher Bay Resort, K'gari Beach Resort (Eurong), Happy Valley, Cathedrals on Fraser, and Orchid Beach.
Q. How do I best prepare my vehicle and is recovery gear required?
A. The world's largest sand island requires a few 4WD tips and tricks to help plan your visit.
- Tyre pressure – Set it low, around 18 PSI when driving in the sand, as it increases the surface area for your tyre to grip, especially in softer sand conditions.
- Momentum – Keeping a steady pace is key, particularly when driving uphill on the tracks, to ensure that your tyres don’t sink into the sand.
- Technique – Drive to the conditions, and slowly work up your speed. The inland tracks have a limit of 30km/h - keep an eye out for pits and fallen tree branches. 75 Mile Beach has an 80km/h speed limit in some areas, however, it’s important to monitor the beach ahead of you and be cautious of washouts or run-off from nearby creeks.
- Planning – Travel along 75 Mile Beach travel during low tide times, where more of the beach is exposed and easier to navigate, and avoid driving two hours on either side of high tide.
- Recovery – Always pack a set of MAXTRAX + a snatch strap as your 4WD essentials.
- Courtesy – The inland tracks have a series of pull-off bays, allowing other vehicles to pass through. Be sure to give way to convoys and larger vehicles or coaches.
